I refer to Ankh-Morpork, the Disc’s most populous city state, as my home away from home. I am currently collecting the clothbound ‘Collector’s Library’ Discworld editions, much to the chagrin of my bank account. I have two Discworld posters that take up an entire wall of my bedroom. It’s my favourite book series of all time, and if you have ever had a conversation with me longer than five minutes, you’ll probably be made aware of this fact very quickly. I picked up my first Discworld book when I was 16 and never looked back. While initially a parody of classic fantasy tropes and books such as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Discworld eventually took on a life of its own, sprawling across different character arcs and locations. Set on a flat disc resting on the back of four elephants, who are, in turn, standing on a turtle travelling through the endless depths of space, it has become one of the most popular fantasy series of all time. Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series was born in 1983 with the publication of its flagship book, The Colour of Magic. While they can’t keep complete order in the city, they try their best.It’s quite a daunting thing to start reading a 41-book series, especially when the only rule is that you don’t start with the first book. They would follow Vimes to the end of the Earth, and sometimes they very well do. Crossbow, and Nobby Nobbs, who is well, Nobby Nobbs. We have Angua, a werewolf lieutenant that stays far away from silver, Detritus the troll who hasn’t quite mastered Mr. The Watch, of course, has more leaders than Vimes and Carrot. They learn to work together Carrot reminds Vimes why he became a policeman in the first place, and Vimes grounds Carrot to adjust to the city’s morally grey area.
Vimes decides to take charge before Carrot gets in trouble arresting the Thieves Guild, and when a dragon attempts to usurp Patrician Vetinari, the leader of the city. He planned for Carrot Ironfoundersson, a human foundling raised by dwarves, to enter the city, rescue the citizens from the dragon, and take over the story. Terry Pratchett didn’t expect Sam Vimes to rise to the occasion.
